Shanxi, cloaked by the mountains and girded by the rivers, is a place endowed with the fine spirits of the universe. Five-thousand-year history makes it the Chinese nation’s ancestral land and a cradle of the Chinese Nation. The Nature bestowed on this land of both natural and cultural treasures, which assured its continued effect on Chinese civilization, laid a foundation for generations of development and shaped the spirits of the people.

The well-known mythological figures, Goddess Nüwa, who was responsible for sky-patching after the pillar supporting the heavens was damaged, and the Jingwei bird, who was filling the sea with pebbles (to symbolize a dogged determination to achieve one's purpose), resided in this place, and gave Shanxi rich mystical color.

Shanxi is also home to such legendary Emperors as Yan Di and Huang Di, who are regarded as the earliest sovereign of the Chinese nation. Yao, Shun and Yu, who are believed to be moral and benevolent rulers in early Chinese history, all established their capitals in Shanxi, and did various good deeds for local people. King Wen of Jin Kingdom, one of the five feudal princes in the Spring and Autumn Period, rose from Shanxi. Lei Zu (inventor of sericulture) and Hou Ji (developer of primitive agriculture) were considered teaching their skills in Shanxi. From Jinyang (the present capital city of Shanxi), Li Yuan family, founder of Tang Dynasty (618-907AD), mounted to the apex of power in China.

Under the Chinese Scholar Tree in Shanxi’s Hongtong County, a royal order dispatched Shanxi People to various places of the country for the compensation of war-caused population lost during Yuan (1206-1368AD) and Ming (1368-1644AD) Dynasties. Descendants of Shanxi people since then immigrated all over China.

In Ming and Qing Dynasty (1636-1911AD), Shanxi people went west beyond the Great Wall for opening the commercial road. Generations of business have established Shanxi Merchants’ good reputation of integrity, justice and faithfulness. The Piao Hao (or draft bank), China’s earliest currency transferring system, was developed by Shanxi merchants and later become so prosperous that its business spread the whole country and countries in Asia and Europe. Shanxi had been taking the leading position in China’s banking industry.
